Films by Skip Norman in Berlin

Screening and Introduction by Volker Pantenburg
Zeughauskino Berlin

In the framework of the film series, exhibition, and book publication "Die Bilderwelten des Jonatan Briel", four of Skip Norman's DFFB films are going to be screened at Zeughauskino Berlin. Skip Norman was a close collaborator on Briel's short film "Ein sonderbarer Fall von Liebe" (1973) and his feature length "Glutmensch" (1975). Apart from being the director of photography for these two films, Briel and Norman stayed in close contact until Briel's untimely death in 1988. Frederik Lang, who co-organised the Briel events together with Maja Roth, writes in the DHM program: "Jonatan Briel’s African American classmate Skip Norman had already been involved in two of Briel’s student films – which, unfortunately, are currently unavailable – before taking on the role of cinematographer for Briel’s films "A Strange Case of Love" (1973) and "Glutmensch" (1975). At first glance, Norman’s own DFFB films have little in common with those of his friend, as they deal with the “politics and poetics of revolutionary Black thought […]. At the same time, a common thread can be recognized in their historical consciousness, which explores their respective origins and makes room for the desire for a different, better life.” (Volker Pantenburg in the accompanying publication "Die Bilderwelten des Jonatan Briel") 'Blues People' combines the music of the American South with explicit sexuality, “a reflection on the history of violence in the U.S. and its forms of sublimation” (Pantenburg), while in 'Cultural Nationalism' and 'Strange Fruit', the words of Black Panther co-founder Bobby Seale enter into a dialogue with the experimental visual imagery." The screening will be preceded by an introduction by Volker Pantenburg.
